|Project scope||Environmental noise barriers|
|Project type||New build|
Jacksons Fencing was chosen by JCW Acoustic Supplies to produce a bespoke acoustic sound barrier to reduce noise at Barnfield South Academy.
Barnfield South Academy, part of the Barnfield Federation is located in Rotheram Avenue, Luton. In March 2011 the academy moved into a new building with facilities including all weather sports pitches, an indoor games court, dance studios and a theatre. The new building is located relatively close to the M1 motorway and is also under the flight path of Luton airport.Solution
Jacksons completed a site survey to investigate the existing steel structure that was proposed to be made into an acoustic barrier using custom-built, galvanised steel posts and timber acoustic cladding.
The new steel work had to fit exactly to the existing frame and each measurement had to be incredibly precise. Once the steelwork was fitted, timber batons were bolted onto the existing steel frame and Jakoustic acoustic timber boards were then added. They were in turn bolted to new steel posts, at 2.4m centres.
The outside of the structure was 30m wide and clad to a height of 7.5m.
Jakoustic boards have a unique clamping system, which ensures the sound attenuation property of the barrier is maintained. The panels are constructed from 34mm thickness boards, the edges of which are machined with a combination of an interlocking “vee” system and tongue and groove effect.Benefits
The barrier is covered by a 25 year guarantee against rot and insect attack because of the Jakcure treatment process used by Jacksons on their softwood. The steel posts are hot dip galvanised and are also covered by a 25 year service life guarantee.
The project was completed within 12 weeks of the intial site survey, on time and to budget.
