The brief was for an iconic, intellectual and cultural facility for both the University community, the city of Aberdeen and for scholars and the wider public throughout the world.  The new library building was to be situated centrally in the old university campus and was designed by Stephen Willacy of Schmidt Hammer Larssen architect.

The new facilities were required following a sharp rise in visitor numbers since the worldwide success of Dan Brown's novel The Da Vinci Code, and the subsequent 2006 film, in which the chapel is a key setting.
